Wavetec is a customer experience technology company, headquartered in Dubai, that designs and delivers queue management, self-service kiosks, digital signage and analytics. It operates from 11 offices around the globe and has solutions in use across 80+ countries, backed by more than 30,000 customer experience installations worldwide.
Dubai, UAE. Wavetec has launched its first Self Service Kiosk for Virgin Mobile UAE at Virgin Megastore, Dubai Mall. The initial order comprises 19 customized kiosks, and unlike a standard deployment, each one is built around Virgin Mobile’s own store design: a tilted, smartphone-inspired touchscreen in a wooden enclosure, with no physical SIM cards and no printers.
The launch lands as the SIM card itself starts to disappear. The GSMA reports that global eSIM smartphone penetration stood at 5% at the end of 2025, is expected to reach 10% by the end of 2026, and is forecast to see eSIM smartphone connections outnumber removable SIM connections by 2030. Virgin Mobile UAE has been moving in the same direction. It introduced UAE PASS identity confirmation for app-based eSIM onboarding, which it described as a first for the UAE market, and facial recognition for eSIM activation for tourists. The kiosk at Dubai Mall brings that digital-first approach into the physical store.

Virgin Mobile had a clear brief. Rather than choose one of Wavetec’s standard kiosk models, it wanted a fully customized solution that would sit naturally inside its modern store fit-out, reflect its digital-first approach and carry its distinctive brand identity. The answer was a kiosk with a tilted, smartphone-inspired touchscreen.
Delivering it took more than hardware engineering. Wavetec worked closely with the joinery and store fit-out company to align the kiosk’s dimensions, wooden enclosure, screen position and overall structure with the physical retail environment. The result is a purpose-built Wavetec Self Service Kiosk that blends into Virgin Mobile’s store while keeping Wavetec’s operational capabilities underneath.
Customization is built into how Wavetec approaches self-service. Its self-service kiosk range notes that hardware and application can be tailored to a customer’s requirements, and its SIM dispensing kiosk page describes telco-specific interfaces with multilingual functionality. Virgin Mobile’s kiosk takes that principle to the physical design as well as the screen.
The most distinctive part of the deployment is how little hardware it uses. Virgin Mobile committed to a completely digital customer journey, so the kiosk leaves out the peripherals most kiosks depend on:
Identity verification matters here because SIM registration in the UAE is a regulated process. Wavetec’s guide to telecom kiosks for KYC, SIM registration and payments explains how its telecom kiosk platform handles face matching with liveness detection and eSIM activation, and its piece on what UAE and Saudi rules require for SIM registration covers the regulatory side. For Virgin Mobile, the design principle is simple: deliver maximum customer impact with minimal hardware complexity.
Behind the ScreenA kiosk this visible still depends on what sits behind the screen. Wavetec’s telecom kiosk platform is built on a three-tier architecture with separate production and staging environments, integrates with operator systems through REST APIs in both cloud and on-premises deployments, and is designed for high availability. On the device itself, Wavetec describes locked-down kiosk modes and staged software updates with rollback, so a change can be tested before it reaches every unit and reversed if needed.
That matters for a rollout that is expected to grow. Wavetec also offers an open SDK with full customization, which gives operators a route to extend the kiosk experience over time rather than rebuild it. These are descriptions of Wavetec’s platform as published in its telecom self-service retail article, not a specification of the Virgin Mobile build.
Virgin Mobile UAE is a brand of Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), the company behind du, according to The National. Wavetec already has an established partnership with du, and Virgin Mobile is now the second telecom brand in the UAE to deploy Wavetec self-service technology. Wavetec announced the wider project in a release in January 2026.
At du, Wavetec reports that its kiosks currently provide more than 10 customer journeys, covering a wide range of everyday telco services. Virgin Mobile’s custom kiosk extends that self-service approach to a second brand under the same parent company.
The first kiosk at Virgin Megastore, Dubai Mall is an important milestone in the partnership. Further expansion opportunities are anticipated following the successful rollout of the first phase of 19 kiosks.
As Virgin Mobile UAE’s Managing Director, Rob Beswick, said when announcing UAE PASS eSIM onboarding: “It has always been our ambition to fully digitalize our customers connectivity journey.” The kiosk extends that ambition to the store floor.
“This project represents more than another kiosk deployment. We transformed a customer’s unique design vision into a practical, fully digital self-service solution, combining customization, innovation and brand integration to deliver maximum impact with minimal hardware.” Wavetec
AI is not part of this Virgin Mobile deployment’s stated scope. It does sit alongside it in Wavetec’s wider platform, which is called Nexia. Here is what each part is described to do, based on Wavetec’s own product pages:
For a regulated industry like telecom, the controls matter as much as the capability. Wavetec states that Nexia queries are read-only, visible and logged, that nothing changes in live operations until an authorized manager approves it, and that it supports role-based access and a full audit trail. It is also described as model-agnostic, so an operator can use its own approved language model.
